Every year on September 5th, India celebrates Teachers’ Day to honor the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, a distinguished philosopher, scholar, and statesman who served as the first Vice President and second President of India. Dr. Radhakrishnan was nominated 27 times for the Nobel Prize—16 times in Literature and 11 times for Peace—and was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor.

The tradition of celebrating Teachers’ Day began in 1962 when Dr. Radhakrishnan’s students wished to celebrate his birthday. He suggested that instead of celebrating his birthday, it would be a privilege if September 5th was observed as Teachers’ Day. Since then, this day has been dedicated to acknowledging the invaluable contributions of teachers in shaping the minds and futures of students.

Teachers’ Day coincides with the 1888 birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, a philosopher, scholar, and India’s second President. He once remarked that “teachers should be the best minds in the country”

When his students sought to celebrate his birthday, he humbly suggested that the day be dedicated to honoring all teachers. Since 1962, India has observed that request as a national Teachers’ Day

Born on September 5, 1888, in Tiruttani (Tamil Nadu), Radhakrishnan rose from modest spiritual roots to become a distinguished academic and philosopher

He lectured globally, served as Vice-Chancellor at Andhra, Banaras Hindu, and Delhi University, and was the first Vice President (1952–1962) and later second President (1962–1967) of India

He received India’s highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna, in 1954, and was nominated 27 times for the Nobel Prize—16 in Literature and 11 for Peace

Beyond academia, he co-founded the Krishnarpan Charity Trust, advocated philosophical understanding, and donated his Templeton Prize to Oxford University. He’s also remembered for bridging Indian and Western thought

The day honors teachers as nation-builders and emphasizes education’s role in shaping society, character, and values

Significance of the Day

Dr. Radhakrishnan’s life teaches students to:

Value knowledge, ethics, and lifelong learning

Embrace humility, service, and inclusivity

How It’s Celebrated Across the Nation

Schools and colleges host cultural programs: speeches, skits, songs, and poems performed by students

A popular practice: senior students take over teacher roles, sometimes dressing like them, conducting classes for juniors, while teachers become students for a day

Students pay tribute with cards, flowers, garlands, and personalized messages

Activities often include friendly games, welcome assemblies, and other interactive events—highlighting mutual respect and playful bonding

Dr. Radhakrishnan believed that “teachers should be the best minds in the country.” He emphasized the importance of education in nation-building and regarded teachers as essential pillars of society. His teachings continue to inspire generations, highlighting values such as ethics, integrity, and the pursuit of knowledge.

On this special day, schools and educational institutions across India organize various activities to honor their teachers.
