The General Ledger (G/L) Process in SAP is a key part of the Financial Accounting (FI) module. It handles all accounting data for an organization and serves as the central repository for financial transactions.
Hereโs a detailed overview of the General Ledger Process in SAP:
๐น 1. Master Data Setup
Before any transactions can be posted, master data must be configured:
- G/L Account Master Data:
- Created via
FS00,FSP0, orFSS0(depending on whether it’s chart of accounts or company code-specific). - Contains control data (e.g., account group, currency, open item management).
- Created via
- Company Code:
- Defines the legal entity for which G/Ls are maintained.
- Chart of Accounts:
- A structured list of all G/L accounts used by one or more company codes.
๐น 2. Posting Financial Transactions
Transactions are posted to the G/L using various document entry screens:
- T-Codes:
FB50: General Ledger Posting (single-screen)F-02: General PostingFB01: Post Document
- Each document includes:
- Document header (posting date, document type, reference)
- Line items (G/L account, debit/credit amount, cost center, etc.)

- Document Types (e.g., SA โ G/L account document, KR โ Vendor invoice)
- Posting Keys (e.g., 40 for Debit, 50 for Credit)
- Automatic Account Determination can be set up for integration with other modules like MM and SD.

- Park & Post:
FV50,FV60, etc., allow users to park documents for review before final posting.

- Controlling (CO): Cost center postings often accompany G/L entries.
